The learning never ends. I'm never satisfied with my photos and upon looking back at past work, I always seem to focus on what needs to be improved. That often gives me  and excuse to go shopping. I ended up picking up more lights and have been reading up on how to produce more "commercial-like" looks.

Photo processing and vintage looks have their place, but in this shoot with Leah, I really wanted to keep the colors accurate and vibrant and keep the sky and background detail from being lost. To do that, I would have to properly expose both the background and subject.

For these shots, I used an Apollo Wescott 28" softbox mounted on an Alien Bee B800 (camera left) with as fill for a 3pm sun (camera right, top corner) at +3 and a round silver reflector camera right.

I also wanted to keep the short depth of field that my viewers are familiar with. I rented a Sing-Ray variable neutral density filter from the folks at Hawaii Photo Rental, to limit light so I could still shoot wide open at f1.4 at 35mm, which I used in the shot above at about -4. I quickly removed it after seeing how soft it made the shot.

I stopped down to f9 in the next shot (as well as the first shot above). The background isn't as blurred out as I'd like, which gives me an excuse to go shop for a different ND filter. I probably add my circular polarizer in the mix next time for bluer skies. Overall, I'm quite happy with the results!

On May 1, 2011, friends of Ryan Suenaga gathered at Kakaako Waterfront Park to celebrate the life of the man who so affected them.

With a fellowship that met at the pavilion by the water, we socialized and took comfort in each other before spending laying some lei in the ocean. This was a non-religious event, regardless of the spiritual nature. Ryan’s Buddhist background brought Miki Nakura, a minister from Higashi Hongwanji, to share with us a brief chant - Ryan was a regular at this Kaneohe temple.

Valentino Valdez, part of Ryan's “Tweeball” team (which includes myself), had a specially designed T-shirt available for those that attended.

I could feel Ryan's presence in the air that morning. I think he would have scolded us for "wasting" our time on him, but he MORE than deserved it. Aloha, Ryan!

Thanks to all who came and contributed.

You can find a comprehensive list of internet memorials for Ryan at Ryan Ozawa's Blog.

I previously wrote a tribute to Ryan Suenaga in a previous post.

I like to keep my shoots simple and authentic sometimes. There was nothing extraneous about this session with sixteen-year old Noelle - no production, no stylist, no aesthetician, no exotic location, and so forth. She was herself. And it was fun. (I considered this to be a sort of break in between the wedding last weekend and the wedding coming up this weekend.) Noelle had some coffee beforehand and we let her be herself and run wild over the hills of Kakaako Park. All I had to do was show up with my camera. Older sister Lauren looking over my shoulder and my kids riding their bikes beside the hill, I shot this entirely with my 85mm 1.4 using the available light of a setting sun in about 20 minutes time. I kept the edit and processing simple too, trying to get everything completed in 30 minutes or so, so I could get back to work. Here are a few of the shots from that. Enjoy! :)
