(part 1 of 3 in my San Francisco series)

    Sf_sj-53

Last Sunday, I took the first ferry out to Alcatraz. Why? Because I'm a cheap bastard and wanted to save a few bucks. But, thinking as photographer, I also wanted to beat the crowds - it would make more sense to shoot the former prison in a state of desolation and solitude and I thought the clouds over the bay would make for more drama. And besides that, the prison itself was my subject - not the people (as it would be later that morning at the Taylor Street restaurants at the Wharf) I wasn't entirely successful at keeping people out of my shots (the first ferry was already bursting at the seams) but I think there is enough "space" in these shots for meditation. Enjoy!

The learning never ends. I'm never satisfied with my photos and upon looking back at past work, I always seem to focus on what needs to be improved. That often gives me  and excuse to go shopping. I ended up picking up more lights and have been reading up on how to produce more "commercial-like" looks.

Photo processing and vintage looks have their place, but in this shoot with Leah, I really wanted to keep the colors accurate and vibrant and keep the sky and background detail from being lost. To do that, I would have to properly expose both the background and subject.

For these shots, I used an Apollo Wescott 28" softbox mounted on an Alien Bee B800 (camera left) with as fill for a 3pm sun (camera right, top corner) at +3 and a round silver reflector camera right.

I also wanted to keep the short depth of field that my viewers are familiar with. I rented a Sing-Ray variable neutral density filter from the folks at Hawaii Photo Rental, to limit light so I could still shoot wide open at f1.4 at 35mm, which I used in the shot above at about -4. I quickly removed it after seeing how soft it made the shot.

I stopped down to f9 in the next shot (as well as the first shot above). The background isn't as blurred out as I'd like, which gives me an excuse to go shop for a different ND filter. I probably add my circular polarizer in the mix next time for bluer skies. Overall, I'm quite happy with the results!

This past week, I had the opportunity to take my hungry eyes over to the Disneyland Resort in California. As a frequent visitor, rather than just leisurely enjoying myself, I went with a mission this time. I went with purpose - to capture as many characters as I could with my cameras.

I decided to travel light. Most of my photos would be shot in the generous light of the SoCal sun, so fast, heavy lenses and strobes stayed home and wept.

    Camera and lenses:

    • Canon 5D Mark II
    • 24-105L f4 - good all around lens,
    • 70-200 f4-5.6 - great for parade closeups
    • 85mm 1.8 - I don't think I used this even once
    • 50mm 1.8 - Ideally, I would have a 35mm 1.4 but this would have to do. Great for nighttime or in the rides shots.
    • 15mm 2.8 fisheye - something different
    • Canon s95 - brought along this point-n-shoot so that I could give it to other people to take pics of me. Lending people my SLR often led to blurry useless shots and me sobbing buckets (and I look really stupid doing that, so no more).

Now, Most people who's been to a Disney park will tell you that getting a photo of or with a character is no easy feat. You've gotta wait in line, the character could leave at any time, regardless of HOW LONG you waited, or they may not show up or be substituted by some other character right as you are about to step up to the plate. (I noticed that this happens especially if you want a photo with someone in particular. Grr...)

Related story. I was waiting for the Tomorrowland Monorail the other day and overheard a woman griping "I haven't seen one Disney character the entire week that we've been here. Are we even at Disneyland?" I sort of chuckled inside.

They're here, dear, but you have to be lucky, a fortunate victim of happenstance, or... put in the energy to study a particular cahracters schedules and hunt them down.

Luck was on my side and all three things happened on this visit. Happy, happy! :)

I took a while bunch of shots, but most would be reduntant to the stuff I posted last year. Instead, I'm just putting up the with Disney face characters (no masks).

    Photo_37_of_67

And now, a fun shoot I did over at Nuuanu Park. Gerri and I tried to schedule something last holiday season but our schedules didn't work out but I'm glad we were able to get in sync. Here are the results.

Here's a bit of my methodology, in case you care to know. :) In choosing a location for a family photosession, I always try to work with the client and pick a location that can accomodate everyone involved. In this case, we had two energetic young boys whom I felt really needed to be in a place where they could play, run free, and be themselves. The playground was a natural choice. Such a location not only gives me a chance to take realistic candids, but it also gives the young ones time to take a break when they are not quite into taking portraits yet. When they tire a bit from play, I gather everyone up and typically get better results on the group shot. Letting them play = a more happy kid = more smiles = no Photoshopping later. (At their age, I never have to extract their smiley face from another shot to paste it on a shot with more positive elements). Oh, I also tend to recommend places with lots of trees and foliage because it not only shades us from harsh light that can unflatter a subject, but too much sun can burn a child out, make them fussy, thirsty, hungry, sweaty. I could write a few more paragraphs, but a photo blog isn't a place for words, right? On to the photos!
