When I first heard that Ohana Arts was putting on a production of "The Wizard of Oz," I was both curious and excited - the film version of the story is a cherished part of my movie collection, and is part of my regular rotation of favorites. How were they going approach this? Would it be grandoise? Minimalist? How close to the source material could this group take it?

Enter, play director Cari Taira. We met at Starbucks a few months back to discuss photography for her upcoming wedding. As do many of my "business" meetings, discussions turned casual and we began to converse about other things - the realities of weddings and the wedding buisness, common friends, theater... I shared about my experiences being on stage a few times and experiences I had photographing stage spectacles such as “The Marriage of Figaro,” last year.

Now, I had originally pre-enrolled my son to be a part of the Ohana Arts summer program, but scheduling didn't quite work out this year. At that point, I thought my involvement would occur strictly as part of the audience, but fortunately, I was able to sell (I almost hate using that word here) Cari on the value of photos. Weeks later I am backstage photographing what I thought was, in the end, a pretty grand, very amazing adaption of the Oz. I'm hoping my photos do it justice!

On May 1, 2011, friends of Ryan Suenaga gathered at Kakaako Waterfront Park to celebrate the life of the man who so affected them.

With a fellowship that met at the pavilion by the water, we socialized and took comfort in each other before spending laying some lei in the ocean. This was a non-religious event, regardless of the spiritual nature. Ryan’s Buddhist background brought Miki Nakura, a minister from Higashi Hongwanji, to share with us a brief chant - Ryan was a regular at this Kaneohe temple.

Valentino Valdez, part of Ryan's “Tweeball” team (which includes myself), had a specially designed T-shirt available for those that attended.

I could feel Ryan's presence in the air that morning. I think he would have scolded us for "wasting" our time on him, but he MORE than deserved it. Aloha, Ryan!

Thanks to all who came and contributed.

You can find a comprehensive list of internet memorials for Ryan at Ryan Ozawa's Blog.

I previously wrote a tribute to Ryan Suenaga in a previous post.

(My blog wasn't very presentable at the time of this event so I'm finally posting now. Better late than never, right?)

A number of us were extremely fortunate to be lifted to and tour the USS Ronald Reagan as it was exercising in Hawaiian waters for RIMPAC. We got to experience (up-close and personal) fighter jet take-off and landings on deck, as well and tour the belly and tower of this amazing machine. We also got to experience deceleration from 125 to 0 mph in two seconds and acceleration from 0 to 150 mph in three seconds. Crazy. And it was a blast - quite literally. Thank you, Captain Kenneth Norton, for your hospitality while onboard. I certainly have greater appreciation for our armed forces and your service to this country!
