November 5th was Military Appreciation Night at Aloha Stadium when Utah State brought their brand of football up against the Hawaii Warriors. There were special presentations before kick-off, honoring military spouses, as well as a "wounded warrior" ceremony at halftime. Military and local dignitaries were there for the festivities, amongst a grateful crowd and the always jubilant University of Hawaii Marching Band.

On the field and under a rainy Halawa sky, the hometown Warriors lead 31-14 after three quarters. Utah State then rallied for the comeback to win 35-31. Pre-season Heisman hopeful and quarterback Bryant Moniz finished with 227 yards through the air on 27-of-43 passing and joined Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan in the 10,000-plus yards club. The loss, however, puts Hawaii out of the race for the Western Athletic Conference title.

As a huge Hawaii fan, it was great being on the sidelines shooting again. But it's always a privilage to honor the men and women who put their lives on the line for our freedom every day.

October 25, 2011 - With the NBA in a lockout, reigning league MVP Derrick Rose is leading a USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour of players to military bases in Hawaii. The group, including NBA stars Tyreke Evans, Al Horford, D.J. Augustin, Brook Lopez, JaVale McGee, Robin Lopez and Mike Miller, is playing basketball with soldiers and their families on base. They will lead youth clinics and meet with military families and hopefully boost morale.

I was fortunate to be there last night and have the opportunity to take some pics.

"It is an honor anytime I am able to give back and I appreciate the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and visit with troops and their families on a USO tour," said Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings. Evans also happened to hit the game winning shot at the buzzer that night.

There will be another tour exhibition at Schofield Barracks on Thursday evening.

(I shot these photos with my pair of Canon 5D Mark II bodies and a 70-200 2.8 II at 4000 iso. I really wish I'd had a 7D or even the new 1D-X. Being able to anticipate a move on instinct is great, but having a quick burst-rate is sometimes better. Enjoy!)

My kids started soccer last weekend. Now, as a disclamer, that in no way makes me a "soccer mom." Soccer dad? Maybe. But let me digress. We chose to go with i9Sports not only for their core principles, but because the practice and game schedule don't require you to sell your soul. We might decide to do that later, but considering that this is the kids' foray into the world of competitive sports, we didn't want to scare them off too soon. Both practice and games occur on Saturday mornings, and there is no practice to scrimmages during the week. That gives us time to participate or accomplish other things, which I think is a big plus. Time, right now, is the most valuable thing to me. :)

Last weekend, the Hawaii Warriors upset number 19 Nevada. I had an opportunity to shoot the game from the field with a few others Tweeps. It was the quite an exhilarating experience. Here are a few pics:

I grateful for the experience. Hopefully I'll get another chance to shoot a sporting event like this! :)
